The study imagines a courtyard that people cross every day but rarely stay in. Its open centre is useful for movement, while the edges offer little shelter or reason to pause.
The question is deliberately small: what could turn a route through the neighbourhood into a place within it, without filling the whole space?

A light canopy follows one side of the courtyard. A continuous seat gathers beneath it, sometimes facing the open centre and sometimes turning towards the planting. The open middle remains available for passing through and informal use.
The canopy’s rhythm creates pockets of shade without making a single enclosed room. A planted edge gives the seating a softer backdrop and a clear boundary to the walking route.

The seat is broken by generous openings so a person can join a group without taking the long way round. Different positions offer a view of the courtyard or a quieter relation to the garden.
Roof drainage, accessible circulation, seating dimensions and planting maintenance would need to be developed with site-specific evidence and the people responsible for the place.

Test the courtyard’s actual routes, sun and wind conditions, then discuss the proposed seating with potential users. Develop the canopy structure and drainage with appropriate specialists before moving beyond concept.
